"This duct-tape messenger bag is totally rad."

Yes! It is totally rad! And we're all wearing duct-tape truckers caps and listening to the White Stripes! On our iPods!

See?! "Remix" isn't that difficult a word.

Repeat after me: "remix" "remix" "remix"

        Very good!

Repeat after me: "If I see anything anybody else has described in the 'blogosphere' as 'cool' or 'totally rad' I will run away and read Alvin Toffler some more."

P.S. CDs made from 78s are acceptably referred to as "totally rad", unless these CDs contain "mashups" of 20s and 30s era material (ie, "The Carter Family vs. Chick Webb").

              Mash that track
              Give the past a hack
              Step on a legal crack
              Break the RIAA's back

When a cool song comes along you must mash it
Before the dream sits out too long you must mash it
When copyright's going wrong you must mash it

Now mash it - into shape
              Mash it up, get straight
              Go forward, move ahead
Try to detect it - it's not too late
To mash it, mash it good

              / C - G - / D - C - / : / C - - - /

When a good mix turns around you must mash it
You will never live it down unless you mash it
No one gets their tracks until they mash it

              I say mash it
              Mash it good
              I say mash it
              Mash it good

              / E G C - / E G D - / :

              {Repeat first two verses}

Now mash it - into shape
              Shape it up, get straight
              Go forward, move ahead
Try to detect it - it's not too late
To mash it - into shape
              Shape it up, get straight
              Go forward, move ahead
Try to detect it - it's not too late
To mash it, mash it good

Not that I didn't like the end result, it's the "M-word" that I couldn't stand.

Now, if Cory considered the Haunted Mansion movie as a _mashup_ of his beloved ride and "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken", I'm sure he'd like it more.

Visiting Europe for an American these days is like dropping in on another planet, a world of attitudes and politics that is increasingly world's apart from the discourse found in U.S. media.

On a Saturday walk through a working class neighborhood in Barcelona, I noticed that someone had stenciled all over the walls that iconic image of that hooded and wired Iraqi prisoner being forced to assume a Crucifixion pose in this year of Mel Gibson's The Passion.

Next to it, another stenciled image: the outline of a hand holding a leash, just a snatch of that picture of the female GI dragging an Iraqi man like a dog. It took a second to recognize it, but recognize it you did. Those images have become the wall drawings, the hieroglyphics of our era. There were no captions or slogans, because none were needed. If there ever was a moral rationale for the US invasion of Iraq, it has been lost in an avalanche of images that render words and policy logics irrelevant. The sickening reality of depravity as policy and practice is undeniable. The pornography of war stands revealed for what it is ... pornography.
