Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 8:42 AMI assume because (a) it's something Xeni did and, (b) she found it really interesting?
Why do you think it doesn't belong there? -

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 12:32 PMIt seems too personal blogish and less fitting with the "directory of interesting things" theme. I'm not as big a fan of the Mark rants as the Other is. I could see this working better if Xeni had created a page about the experience and then put a small entry in BoingBoing about that page.
"I shot a gun for the first time yesterday, and I've put pictures and video about the experience up on a page. Link Posted by Xeni ..." -

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 2:56 PMWell thank god we have you here to analyze what fits on boingboing! Seriously, what goes through your head? It's there because Xeni is an editor and felt like posting it. You need more of a reason? I really don't get the perverted sense of ownership random boingboing readers feel they have.

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 3:46 PMCorrection, it's a directory of WONDERFUL things (some BB fan you are...) and I personally think that ANYONE learning to properly load, handle and fire a weapon is a wonderful thing, especially a woman. And, especially in California where the prevailing gun laws try to discourage legal firearm-handling at all. It's entirely too rare an occurrence, take it from me as a female, gun-owning, FORMER California resident.
What I thought was funny was the wanker who wrote them to 'correct' shit just to be a contrarian about terminology, who was totally ignorant of the fact that 10-round clips/mags are the legal max in California. -

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 8:21 PMbut it's a pretty boring post, and doesn't even have any of that Cory OMG ITS THE END OF OUR RIGHT TO XXXX AS WE KNOW IT urgency.
It was pretty diaristic, and more of a "look at this thing that I did" and didn't seem to go beyond that, like Mark's rants do.
you know, no call to action, or anything.
Ownership? 1)hell yeah, they're an LLC selling our eyeball clicks, and the band-manager won't even give out backstage passes. 2) such is the purpose of this forum, to discuss & critique -- not slavishly drool over BB content. back in my writing days, I was disgusted if I only ever heard good things when I asked for criticism. If people only ever have nice things to say, they should not be trusted. -

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 7:22 AMAgreed on the ownership. But a boring post? I've had a desire to use a firearm for a little while now, so maybe I enjoyed the post a little more than most.
What kills me is all the copyfighting stuff. I can only read about what the lastest DRM is so many times before I want to gouge out my eyeballs. I think theres a direct correlation between the intresting posts, and the posts with pictures. -

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 7:35 AMI hear you on the copy(r|f)ight posts; although I'm a bit interested in them, they seem to be the new W*F*. However, they quite often have the OMG ITS TEH DEATH OF OUR RIGHTS WTF?!!11! whizz-bang interjected into them, which smooths out the annoying edges for me. -

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 6:55 AMAnd I tend to really enjoy the copyfight stuff, because all the ivory-tower copyright/patent holders, the DRM-pushers and IP-rebels/insurgents (read: "pirates") are literally shaping the way our culture will move forward. I find that I'm entranced by any advances across the field, forward or back, and tend to follow it like reports from the field in an cultural battleground.
Since Xeni has her own site, it might have been better served up as a link to that, but the very questioning of a single blog entry is bordering on overanalysis. If Xeni starts posting about her grocery shopping, or some guy who cut her off in traffic, then I'll concur that BB has gone LJ. In the meantime, it was an article about a teh hawt geek grrl firing live ammo, so that's all good.
Everyone is going to have somes stuff that they like and some they don't. BB is huge compared to its beginnings, and there is nothing to be done about it. Without a BBS, and with little or no feedback about why submissions are accepted or not, it has turned from an interactive community into one that is consumed passively. And it is consumed on a big enough scale that, as Warren Ellis stated, they have their own "band manager" to deal with the biz and subsequent greenbacks. To take the "band" analogy further, each of us is free to determine for ourselves as fans if they're still the band we know and love, or if they've sold out. They're more mainstream than they were, but I perceive them to still be doing their own thing, so I'm still showing up to watch. -

Re: Xeni shoots a gun
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 6:56 AMI'm gonna start up a BB-tribute blog.
Gonna do covers of what I think are their "greatest" posts.
Dress in character, natch.
