From the translated japanese interview:
"3. No compromising to advertisers or to readers
While they haven't created a corporation in the traditional way, "bOING bOING" has become a true business. With 200,000 hits daily from inside and outside the U.S., the company made $20,000 in advertisements from skateboard brand and a T-Shirt company in March, however maintaining an independent spirit is the the most important thing."
Maybe that's 20,000 yen.

Re: $20,000 in March!
Mon, August 22, 2005 - 6:06 AMMakes it seem like thats just in March. 12( months) * $20,000 (monthly ad revenue) / 7 (Employees) = $30,000 (yearly income per employee). If you like PBR and Ramen, its defenitly a living wage. or at least better living than your local fryer jockey. Of course, it also just says that they made that in advertisements, it doesnt say if it took into account their expenses. -

Re: $20,000 in March!
Mon, August 22, 2005 - 9:50 AMExpenses for the type of site boingboing runs have dropped dramatically in the past 5 years or so. I'd be surprised if they're spending more than $250/month for hosting costs.
It might even be less than that.
And yeah, $30,000 on top of what Cory makes at the EFF and what he makes from writing... no wonder he can afford to give his books away in .txt files. ;)
I love the site, so I'm happy for them. -

Re: $20,000 in March!
Thu, September 29, 2005 - 9:17 PMThe "Band Manager" is raking in the advertising dollars (and getting name-checked by the Onion), and he pays off Corey in vintage Monopoly MOney and Musketeer's hats; Frauenfelder get ads clipped from 1950s magazine that have been lying in somebody's garage; Pesco gets told he's being paid in nan-currency, and once the industry develops nano-banks he can deposit it all; and Xeni is being paid in.... Suicide Girls tips (possible this involves "Missy," somehow).
Nevertheless, each is rich in the way they would wish to be. rich in. -
